"Just Transition Strategy Framework: A Holistic Vision for Economic Transformation"

with

Deseree Fontenot

Movement Generation

Oakland, California

Just Transition is a framework for a fair shift to an economy that is ecologically sustainable, equitable and just for all its members. After centuries of global plunder, the profit-driven, growth-dependent, industrial economy is severely undermining the life support systems of the planet. An economy based on extracting from a finite system faster than the capacity of the system to regenerate will eventually come to an end—either through collapse or through our intentional re-organization. Transition is inevitable. Justice is not.

This workshop is an introduction to the Just Transition strategy framework, as well as the political analyses, principles and economic concepts that are part of it. This framework has been a key anchor for communities and organizations around the country, working across sectors to move a unified vision and strategy for ecological justice. We will focus in on the role of sustainable agriculture, food sovereignty and food system movements in bringing about a Just Transition towards regenerative economies.

Deseree Fontenot is a collective member of Movement Generation: Justice and Ecology Project (MG). MG engages hundreds of organizations and change agents through intensive justice & ecology retreats, political education workshops, hands-on ecological skills workshops, peer exchange, campaign development, alliance building, strategic support sessions, cultural productions and so much more. As a queer black organizer, farmer, and grassroots ecologist, Deseree plays lots of roles at MG focused on land and liberation and queering ecological education. Deseree grew up between Southwest Louisiana and the Los Angeles area and has been based in the Bay Area for the last decade. Before joining MG, Deseree worked as a farmer, scholar and organizer-educator with the People of Color Sustainable Housing Network, Northern California Land Trust and the Queer EcoJustice Project.  Deseree spent almost a decade working within LGBTQ movements. She holds an interdisciplinary MA in Social Transformation focused on African-diasporic spiritual traditions, queer ecology and land-based movements.  Deseree is also an alumna of the ecological farming apprenticeship at the Center for Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems at UC Santa Cruz.  As a descendant of three generations of rural Louisiana sharecroppers, Deseree is committed to strengthening movements for land rematriation, healing and black liberation. She loves to nerd out on queer ecology, creole/cajun food and culture, and regenerative systems.

Desi requests that attendees read this zine before the presentation.

She also recommends listening to this recent episode of the Movement Generation podcast "Did We Go Too Far?"
