Derrick Kapayou-Collaborative science with Indigenous food growers to improve soil and community health
Derrick Kapayou (Meskwaki) is a student at Iowa State studying Sustainable Agriculture. Derrick began his training at ISU studying agronomy – crop production, and then transitioned to focus on agri-social science as his studies progressed. As a graduate student, Derrick has interviewed people from many populations to learn from them how agriculture impacts their way of life. At ISU, Derrick has acquired his Bachelors degree in 2018, his MS and MA degrees in 2022, and is now a 3rd year PhD student. Derrick is the President of the Board of Directors for Meskwaki Hemp Supply, and was recently a guest speaker on Iowa Public Radio to talk about the article he freshly published about the impacts on the survivors of the 2018 flash flood in Des Moines.
