    Neil Hamilton, Director of the Agricultural Law Center at Drake University in Des Moines will discuss the 2018 Farm Bill and how it is currently affecting Iowa farmers. The colloquium session will also take a look at how policy can shape agriculture at the state level.

    Refugee Farming in Central Iowa

    Global Greens is a program that helps refugees in Central Iowa find land to farm and provide markets for selling produce. This session will also discuss how the program helps to foster a sense of community through the establishment of urban farms in the Des Moines metro area.

    Refugee Farming in Central Iowa

    Chris Jones is a Research Engineer at IIHR-Hydroscience and Engineering at the University of Iowa. He has BA in Biology in Chemistry from Simpson College (Iowa) and a PhD in Chemistry from Montana State University. His research interests include water monitoring and contaminant hydrology in agricultural watersheds. He manages the university’s network of real-time water quality sensors that are deployed at about 60 sites around the state of Iowa. At the Sustainable Agriculture Colloquium, he will discuss water quality issues in Iowa.

    Seth Watkins, a farmer in Clarinda, Iowa, will be joined by Jeremy Jackson, a Marine Scientist from San Diego, California to discuss the effects of Iowa's agriculture beyond the state border. The session will also include a farmers' look at the current landscape of sustainable agriculture in the state.

    A Journey into Agtivism: Elevating Public Education and Transforming School Lunch

    Mim Michelove is the Co-founder and CEO/President of the San Diego-based nonprofit Healthy Day Partners, and Founding Director of EUSD Farm Lab where she established the first certified-organic, district-wide Farm to School program in the United States. Her work in designing and implementing nutritional and environmental wellness education, and creating school gardens and urban farms that provide meaningful, experiential learning opportunities, has amassed numerous regional, state, and national awards.

    Land as a Common Good: How We Can Feed Iowa in a Climate Crisis

    Suzan Erem is a co-founder and executive director of the Sustainable Iowa Land Trust, a statewide nonprofit that permanently protects land to grow healthy food. Suzan graduated from the University of Iowa in 1985 with a Journalism and English degree but quickly found herself involved in making her community a better place.

    Watershed Planning Expands Opportunities

    Karl Gesch serves as an Environmental Programs and Services Project Manager at the Iowa Soybean Association in Ankeny, Iowa. During this colloquium session he will present on watershed planning in Iowa and working with farmers and land overs to evaluate, implement and monitor conservation practices.

    Bridging the Divide: Urban and Rural Conservation in Iowa

    John Swanson is a Des Moines native and graduate of Simpson College.  John has spent the last 8 years working for Polk Soil and Water Conservation District where he has led projects including restoration work at Easter Lake and multiple watershed improvement projects.  In his current role, as Watershed Management Authority Coordinator, he is facilitating implementation activities with three local watershed and their 17 member communities.

    Angie Tagtow is a registered and licensed dietitian with more than 25 years of experience in public health and food policy. She was Executive Director of the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion during the Obama administration and co-led the development and launch of the 2015–2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans with the US Department of Health and Human Services.
