Suzanne Millman receives the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching

Suzanne Millman, professor, veterinary diagnosic and production animal medicine, and SUSAG affiliate faculty member, has received the Louis Thompson Distinguished Teaching award.

Created and instructed a menu of five courses in the professional curriculum, including Intro to Animal Welfare and the clinical animal welfare two-week rotation (which draws students from veterinary colleges across the country).

  • Developed a graduate course (Animal Welfare Science and Research) for the Ph.D. program in Population Sciences in Animal Health, consistently attracting graduate students from several ISU departments.
  • Transformed the college's animal welfare program into one of the most regarded programs in North America.
  • Led the development of the Iowa Farm Animal Care Initiative to prevent neglect in farm animals, providing students with hands-on experience in animal welfare issues.
  • Appointed co-chair of the Model Animal Welfare Curriculum Working Group at the American Veterinary Medical Association, setting national standards for animal welfare education.
  • Serves as advisor to the college's Animal Welfare Club and student chapter of the American Veterinary Society for Animal Behavior.
