Career Planning
For the broader category of agricultural and food scientists (which includes many roles relevant to sustainable agriculture), employment is projected to grow notably faster than average for all occupations. Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics
Changing consumer demand (for local, organic, sustainably-produced food), climate change pressures, and the necessity of more efficient/agile food systems, there is increasing demand for professionals who can integrate sustainability, technology, policy and systems thinking in agriculture. Outcomes will likely vary significantly depending on job type, geographic region, whether the role is on-farm vs. research/consulting vs. policy/education, and whether the graduate has additional specialization (e.g., in precision agriculture, soil science, carbon management, etc.) Because the sustainable agriculture field is evolving (with technology, data, carbon/regenerative practices, global food system pressures) graduates who bring cross-disciplinary skills (agronomy + sustainability + data/tech + business/communication) will be particularly competitive.
Some recent jobs include: Agricultural Geospatial Data Scientist, Economist with the Army Corps of Engineers, Program Manager for ISU Extension, and a Regenerative Agricultural Specialist with ISU’s Bioeconomy Institute.
